That's correct - POSIX is explicit that applications using 8-bit bytes in
character contexts while using the "C" locale have unspecified behavior.
This is technically a bug in gcc for not being prepared for multibyte
characters in the "C" locale.
Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
