TCL brings many of the advantageous of Java, but it's easier to integrate 
'C' functions with and it's available on just about any of the platforms of 
interest.

It's very flexible, very easy to pickup and there is an OO version that 
talks gracefully with structured code.  As an example, I wrote the support 
for the first commercial Java CASE tool (Object Team) that demo'ed in 
SD-West *before* the first JavaOne using TCL and it was my first (and last 
:-) TCL project.

Much as I prefer Java, given the work that has already been done, TCL/TK 
would probably be a better choice for re-writing portions of XConq, 
particularly the network stuff.
