I suggest just a systemtap version number tag.  Our other generated/saved docs
don't have something as self-contradicting as a git commit hash in them.  For
the generated html stuff, I would suggest delaying their regeneration until
next release time, so the burned-in dates don't become an inconsistency with
the release number.
