today's patches

Hi,

I've checked in a number of patches today (beside those I got from
other people).  With these patches glibc and a so far not published
gcc version passes the Plumhall C testsuite.  (The gcc patch needed
was posted by Richard but is so far not in any official source.)

Please give this version a try.  The libio changes are somewhat
complicated and I might have introduced problems (but I think not).
If I hear no complains I'll make the release 2.0.96 this weekend.
