glibc config problem

Hi,

I'm trying to compile glibc to the powerpc-architecture on an i386 host 
via openembedded.

At the configuration of glibc (at ./sysdep/powerpc), it stops with message

| checking for .machine support... no
| configure: error:
| *** A binutils version which can handle
| ***    .machine "altivec"
| *** is needed.

Without going into details, I should first ask: which 'as' should glibc's 
./configure check? Native or powerpc?
