glibc config problem

Hi,

I'm using openembedded on an ubuntu hoary linux box. Trying to compile a 
minimalist aim, at the configuration phase of glibc it stops with the 
following message:

| checking for .machine support... no
| configure: error:
| *** A binutils version which can handle
| ***    .machine "altivec"
| *** is needed.

Reading the source code of "as", there _is_ support for altivec. How glibc 
config tries to query whether 'as' supports .machine "altivec"?
