Regular glibc from Ubuntu. The problem appeared while migrating from Ubuntu 16
to Ubuntu 20, so the gap is enormous, and we didn't bissect to see where the
regression was - but this is something we might try.

The regression is still there with Ubuntu 22; we had an outage recently when
the malloc_trim() worker thread was accidentally removed...
