Installing STDIO with newlib

I recently built a set of tools for the m68k family.  I know that the stdio
library functions were compiled and put into a library, but I found out
later (when I actually tried to use them) that these libraries were never
installed.  Anyone have an idea of why or why not and how to solve this problem?
