newlib 1.7.1 on host systems???

Has anyone managed to build newlib to run on a host, in my case an hppa
running HPUX 9.05?

The problem is I have been running into differences between the current
libc I am using for host testing (ISI pREPC) and newlib on the target. In
particular pREPC has a broken implementation of strtod.

Given that newlib (without libgloss) is fairly platform independent, I was
wondering if I could just compile it for the host and provide _open etc
functions which call syscall to do the real work.

Anyone had any sucess with this sort of stuff?

Currently I can't even get it to try and build!
