binutils 2.18 issue with ld on 68hc11/68hc12 port

A few days ago I reported that:

> When using binutils 2.18 I get an error, but not with 2.17 or earlier.

I have narrowed this down a little. With 2.17.50 I get the same error,
with 2.17 it links ok.

I've done a diff from 2.17 to 2.17.50 but unfortunately it is way too large (699k
lines) for me to even know where to start looking.

Any help would be appreciated.
