solaris support compared to solaris as and ld

Hi

How good are gnu as and ld compared to the ones provided in Solaris >6?

For instance, in the Solaris 2 faq,
ftp://ftp.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2.html,
it is recommended not to use binutils because the Sun ld is more
capable. That is apparently
based on a lot of experience.

What is the current status?
