elf symbol table corrupted by stabs strings?

I've recently merged up to the uberbaum gcc-binutils repository and
suddenly my gas is misassembling files with .stabs in them.

I end up with object modules that have corrupted symbol tables
(the symbol names appear to be stab strings)

Anybody seen anything like this with other ports?  I'm not having a
lot of success trying to figure out WHERE things are going wrong....

The stabs parsing seems fine.  I am wondering if there's a obstack
configuration change that I haven't handled right...
