What is the `archer' branch

Originally I thought we'd have some kind of ongoing merge branch, and
this would be it.  But, we quickly decided instead to use topic
branches and do merges on demand.  So, this branch is dead.  If you
want to reuse it for something else, feel free.  If so, update the
wiki; if not, let me know so I can update the wiki to note its
deadness.
