AFACT, weak symbols are non-portable.
aout and COFF definitely don't support it. I am not sure how portable
they are on ELF targets. Most current GCC/ELF targets seem to support
them (At least, I am not aware of any that doesn't), but newlib is
supposed not to be tied to GCC nor ELF.
