What compilers and configurations are supported on ia64?

I am having a hard time to build the current glibc on RHEL 3/ia64.
When I use the system compiler, "make check" failed in various places
with both nptl and linuxthreads. Gcc 3.4 won't even build glibc on
ia64. Gcc 3.3 Red Hat from CVS seems to OK with linuxthreads. What
compilers and glibc configuration options are supported on ia64?
