Microchip PIC?

I know there are other assemblers for the Microchip PIC line of 
processors (gnupic.org) but I still think it'd be nice to have 
gas/ld/etc for them. Has anyone started such a port? If not, I might 
after I figure out why my autoconf is always making empty "configure"s. 
How does mpic16 sound for a target name for the 16[CF]xxx like of chips?
