I just read this archived post:

cause of this problem been determined? After searching around Usenet I
discovered the only immediate solution was to rename the binutils ld
executable to something else to avoid it being found during compilation
using gcc (v2.95.3).
I'm using gcc with binutils 2.10.1 on a Sparc 5 running Solaris 8.
Compiling even the most simple program core dumped until the above
modification of ld was implemented. I don't belong to the binutils list
so please repond to me directly.
