Aha, this reminds me of a real example I forgot about - units in
Panzer General can be mounted or unmounted.
My vague thoughts about these kinds of changes are that they are
more like temporary mode or behavior changes. For instance, you
wouldn't renumber a unit just because it was dug in, but you would
have to if it changed type, because some existing unit might have
that number already. Not insurmountable difficulties though, and
the mode change idea is unimplemented, so this rationale is worth
keeping in mind. Thanks!
