Message-ID: <20020406123236.6aae8802.irox@sbcglobal.net> Hi all, Sorry about my unannounced absence for the last month or so. I no longer work for Red Hat and I moved to Santa Cruz, then had to fight with SBC to turn on my DSL line (the longest block of time I gone without internet access since the early 90s...). The first thing I'd like to talk about is Copyright assignments. While I was still working for RH I brought the idea of making Source-Navigator a multi-copyright holder project to as many people in RH as I could. This would mean people who contribute code to Source-Navigator don't have to sign over thier copyrights to Red Hat. I was never able to get a firm yes or no from anybody, but I would like to implement this (long over due) change anyway. What's happening with "libSN" (or whatever it was called)? I'd prefer to wait until there is something to show before creating a CVS modules for it. Anyway, with contributions from Khamis, Mo and myself we should be able turn out a new SN release. At somepoint I'll go over the last month or so of the mailing list and apply any patches I've missed, reply to any interesting emails, etc.. Thanks for your patience, and a big thanks to everybody who answered email on this list over the last month. :-) Ian. Since you left redhat, is there anybody who still deal with SN in redhat (Mo)? As you see, I packaged all my stuff and released SN50E. It contains the bug fixes, parsers and the gui rework to SN50. I think, this is a good base to start from. We kann put all the stuff on SourceForge and continue developing SN. This in relation with the question, if redhat will allow us to have access to the SN-cvs tree? The CVS Tree contains Tcl/Tk8.3 and SN50 is released with Tcl/Tk8.1. My question here, do we need to always upgrade to the newest tcl/tk release? Because upgrading takes the most time and since we do not have alot of time to work on SN, the benefit will go to improve SN. The copyright stuff has been standing in the way of progress for far too long. We should add a tag to the CVS to mark the last point where assignment to Red Hat was the norm and move on. If anyone objects, we could always make a tar ball and move everything to sourceforge. Hi Chris The Tcl 8.3 upgrade is about 97% done and can be checked out of the CVS at any time. This is the code that will be used for a new 5.1 release (when ready). There should be very few local changes to the SN Tcl 8.3 codebase except for the build system which includes a lot of local mods. cheers Mo DeJong From bruce@steptech.com Wed Apr 10 11:39:00 2002 From: bruce@steptech.com (Bruce Edson) Date: Wed, 10 Apr 2002 11:39:00 -0000 Subject: SN5.0e error Message-ID: <26F9F6EAB586D411850700B0D049E6E4014D2F75@shasta.pdx.steptech.com> Hi Khamis, We've been playing around with your new version of SN (5.0e). My trial period has expired, but I am convinced using log file deugging techniques will be too slow to work on SN with. Please keep in mind that people new to working on this product will have to learn tcl/tk, itcl/itk, the SN code base, and probably other packages I'm not even aware of yet. It's a very large task. A good debugging package is essential to getting more people to work on SN. Or is there more to it? This has nothing to do with the GPL. Only the copyright holder can relicense a given body of code, so the code hosted on Source-Forge will continue to be licensed under the terms of the GPL. The sticking point was the additional requirement to assign the copyright for contributed code to Red Hat. This is unacceptable since it means that Red Hat could take the existing GPLed code and relicense it to a third party under non free terms. Assume for example that you wrote a really stunning autoconf/automake/libtool interface for Source-Navigator. If you assign the copyright to Red Hat, then they would be within their rights to take that code and sell a proprietary version of it. I am not accusing Red Hat of anything, but the possibility is something that none of the development team members could accept. For example, consider the new and improved parsers that Khamis has been working on. http://oimanager.de/sn.htm These parsers can't be merged into the Red Hat distributed version of Source-Navigator because of this misguided policy. Khamis has to take it upon himself to distribute a new version of Source-Navigator just to work around the issue. I would rather see this time and effort going into improving one code base instead of spreading it out over multiple ones. > Now, how does the move to SourceForge helps the license issue? Moving Source-Navigator to SourceForge does not change the license at all. What it does do is get rid of the need for contributors to give up their copyrights. A contributor only needs to agree to license any code under the terms of the GPL. It also means that the developers can actually check changes into the CVS again. Now that both Ian and I no longer work at Red Hat, there is nobody left to check in patches or even process copyright assignments. Many attempts were made to resolve this issue and continue to host the project on sources.redhat.com. These attempts did not bear any fruit, rehosting the project was the only viable solution. cheers Mo DeJong From khamis2@t-online.de Wed May 1 00:14:00 2002 From: khamis2@t-online.de (Khamis Abuelkomboz) Date: Wed, 01 May 2002 00:14:00 -0000 Subject: Source-Navigator moves to SourceForge! The lists are split up based the subjects that will be discussed. The sourcenav-user list will cover end user issues. The sourcenav-devl list will focus on implementation issues and internal details that most end users will not care about. There is also a sourcenav-patch list that can be used to propose, discuss, and review patches. More on that below. During this period I had some suggestions from more knowledgeable peoples that I think would be beneficial to SN. a) It would be good to add to the API libraries functions that will allow to query the library from within a parser. Example: if I have a function call somemethod( par1, par2 ); and par1 is of type class P from which classes C1 and C2 are inheriting, then par1 can be of type P or C1 or C2. But when I parse Java file by file, I have no way to know it unless I query the database. This will improve the cross-ref functionality to better display polymorphism. b) It would be good to turn the code of those libraries into loadable modules (.dll, .so, etc). Thus, I can supply my own without having to recompile all the parsers. The idea behind is that I will be able to add to the current structure of the database transparently, to store more information, to support different kinds of queries, etc. Or, I can use my own kind of database just by changing this module. c) In this case, the tcl/tk code probably would need to me modified to query through this module too, and, eventually, group the query functionality in one place. It would be easier to modify it - I noticed that although I can insert xrefs to classes or to local variables, those are not displayed. I have no intimate knowledge with tcl, sorry. About the replacement Java parser: you can find it at http://209.47.210.117:8080/sn.html for now. It detects interface/class inheritance, interface/class structure, methods and class variables properly. It detects some cross-references too but very limited (I will resume work on it in a couple of weeks probably). It is much slower than the original :(. It requires JDK/JRE to work. Regards, a. The snavigator and db modules exist just as they did in the source navigator CVSROOT. The tcl, tk, itcl, tix, and libgui modules live in the gdb CVSROOT. Red Hat does not own the copyrights to tcl, tk, itcl, and tix, so those modules are not and issue. The libgui module is a bit of a sticking point, but I have not dealt with that issue. > Since there is noboy who works on SN in redhat, we should define a fix > date to switch > to the SourceForge mailing list. For now, the only changes going in will be for the 5.1 release. The Tcl/Tk upgrade was a huge amount of work. Getting a release that incorporates those changes and fixes any bugs we can along the way is plenty of work for 5.1. We can talk about what to do after 5.1 on the sourcenav-devl list. Contracting with the maintainers to fix bugs or implement new features can be the most effective way to move Source-Navigator forward. cheers Mo DeJong From supermo@bayarea.net Wed May 1 20:56:00 2002 From: supermo@bayarea.net (Mo DeJong) Date: Wed, 01 May 2002 20:56:00 -0000 Subject: Source-Navigator moves to SourceForge! We have created a TCL process that will augment the xref tables for Source Navigator. We want to do this so as to be able to cross-reference unique macro method invocations in our code base. As the process takes time we would like to run it in a separate process much the way dbimp runs, although we're using TCL to do this. Now for the problem, we can set up a pipe for hyper to run the TCL script and that seems to work (we use 'open', and the pipe seems to operate in both directions). We would like to use a pipe so that we can monitor progress and update a progress bar. The problem is that we can't find a way to know that the process has exited (to know when its done). The script has the TCL command 'exit 0' at the end. We've tried waiting for eof or for the pid to change, but it never does. We've tried sending back a unique string from the process so that the calling program can then just 'close' the pipe. The 'close' hangs. I'm also left with a hyper process still running in memory for any of these cases, so just not waiting and continuing on, eventually gets me when I try to exit Source Navigator. Furthermore, you must be "open(2)"-ing the named pipe for both read and write in the consumer process, That, if my guess is correct, is the crux of your problem. Pipes yield a persistent end-of-file condition when no process has the pipe open for writing. If you open the file for reading only (O_RDONLY) in the consumer process, then it will get and end-of-file indication (read will continually return zero bytes read) as soon as the producer has closed its end of the pipe (and after you've read any queued data). By opening the named pipe in read/write mode (O_RDWR), you prevent this end-of-file indication, because as far as the kernel knows, there's still a process that might write to the pipe (in this case, the same process that's reading from the pipe). This is a kind of weak deadlock condition. I say "weak" because a non-ignored signal will interrupt the read and, if not caught and not a "special" signal like SIGCLD or SIGSTOP, terminate the process or, if caught, invoke the signal handler and lead to an EINTR return from the read(2) call. Just change the way your consumer process opens the file, and I believe everything will work as you intend. -- Randall Schulz Mountain View, CA USA At 08:47 2002-05-02, you wrote: >Sorry for sending this to both mail lists, but I figure until everyone has >moved over to the new one at SourceForge I will post to both. > >We have created a TCL process that will augment the xref tables for Source >Navigator. Doesn't seem to matter whether I use r or r+ on the open statement. The tcl script I've created for test purposes, puts up a message box and then exits once I respond to the message box. I noticed that I could use 'puts' in the tcl script and its output went through the pipe to the parent app where it could be read with a 'gets'. This would work great for me. However, I get an error an additional error when hyper can't seem to exit that says 'can't write, channel file556 is not open'. Not sure if this is coming from the script in the spawned hyper process, or from hyper itself. The parent app does indeed receive everything the spawned tcl script sends with the 'puts'. The script ends with a 'exit 0'. This sure seems like a pretty simple task I'm trying to accomplish. Spawn a separate process to run a tcl script, get back occasional updates so I can update a progress bar, exit the process (and hyper) when the script is done, and then have the parent app remove the progress bar when it detects that the spawned process has ended/exited/closed. Is using hyper to run the tcl script process part of my problem? Is there a better way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Consider it Pre-Alpha to Alpha. It does some things right, but the very complicated inheritences and what-not it doesn't and won't. The project homepage is at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/adaparse/ I'm not planning on maintaining it, but I'd hate to lose it because it is at least a start in the right direction. Let me know if you want to take over maintainership of it. Hopefully somebody can get it farther than what I can. On a similar but side note, I did write a tool that would graphically display the entire "use" list, as far as who is using what, and who is used by what. I used it to show how freaking complicated our one Ada application is wrt it's inheritence listing. It's a script set to run on Linux. I'll see if I can dig it out, it may be of interest. --Rich "Deschenaux, Celine" wrote: > Hello, > > The company division I work for does most of its coding in ADA95 in a > Windows NT environment. Just an FYI, The Source-Navigator project has moved to SourceForge and this mailing list is no longer in use. http://sourcenav.sourceforge.net/ Also, you should consider using the Beta of 5.1 since freebsd was not really tested for 5.0. It is more likely 5.1 will work for you. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=796140&forum_id=8966 cheers Mo DeJong From py_fan@eyou.com Mon Jun 17 04:38:00 2002 From: py_fan@eyou.com (py_fan@eyou.com) Date: Mon, 17 Jun 2002 04:38:00 -0000 Subject: Why can't I install SN on freebsd 4.5? Message-ID: your source navigator for version 5 for Unix is broken. when untar'ed it receives checksum failed, and aborts before the tar file is finished. I have download it several times from several different mirrors, even tried downloading it on different machines to make sure it wasn't me. well, guess what, your SN5 is broken. also, it would be nice if you notify and let www.sunfreeware compile the software into a Solaris sparc package. please let me know when this problem is fixed, so I can use the new version of source navigator.
