FWIW I noticed something odd when I put RH8 on my notebook. This
bit of sh script:

#! /bin/sh
yes | dd bs=1024 count=1 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

Yields a error:

yes: standard output: Broken pipe
yes: write error

Whereas I've never seen that before on any other system. If you
execute the same command from the command line, no error.

(my makethumbs.sh script does this to assure dd(1) works as makethumbs
expects, but even without this there is another, actually important,
case where a new error is output when the pipe is closed down early
in my script.)
