runaway gnats processes -- any insight appreciated

We're frequently seeing runaway gnats processes on sourceware.

I thought that this might be due to disk corruption, but AFAICT, this
is no longer the case.

What is interesting is that the processes seem to be stuck on one or
two of the same files.

Specifically:

/sourceware/libre/gnats/gcc-db/target/2416
/sourceware/libre/gnats/gcc-db/c++/1901

So far when a process has been stuck in this state, one of the
above two files has been opened as fd #3.

Can anyone provide any insight into what could be causing this behavior?
gnatsd is apparently looping and using a lot of CPU on sourceware.
