sourceware machine

I'm about to bring it back up after a no-so-fun night of hacking.

Please please don't do anything with it like use the extra
partition on hda4 since I need to double check what kernel
version has the big ide disk fix that we need.

Please don't install a new kernel either. I had the extreme
displeasure of finding out that somewhow, someway the boot
block lilo writes is bogus if and only if the IDE drive
is hooked into the system. Let's say I lost a *lot* of
sleep tracking this one down and figuring how to recover
from this minor disaster.

Yes, damn strange. I'm too sleepy to think about why this
might be the case. I'll wait until I'm in town again to get
the kernel rev-d up properly.

We do have the old scsi disk online in a somewhat hackish form--
let's get the data off the disk that we need, but not start filling
it up with new data. It's not all that secure mounting-wise, which
generally worries me.

Ang -- I baby-sat the rest of the /sourceware/projects dump and
got it completed.

[ We were getting those out of range read errors, which dump
bitched and moaned about, after enough of them it wanted
to verify that it should continue the dump, which of course
  I did :-) ]

There's a new tape in the drive we can use to dump the remaining
partitions.

I'll send more when I've had some sleep.
jeff

ps. We are up to 2.2.12 as a side effect of recovery from
the lilo vs IDE disk battle royal. I'm hoping that some of the
fixes between 2.2.5 and 2.2.12 will make some of the other
intermittant problems go away.
