Support for Cygnus-style trees has been removed

Hi,
I've been using newlib for quite a while now as the libc for a custom
kernel I'm writing on. I've been happy with it so far, but I'm now in a
situation where I haven't been able to compile newlib for a long time
due to the error mentioned in the subject («Support for Cygnus-style
trees has been removed»).
Are there any plans to update the automake configuration files to not
depend on these anymore?
After checking a bit it appears support for Cygnus trees has been
removed from automake¹ in April 2012, and therefore hasn't been in any
automake release after 1.12, the last version of which was released in
December 2012.
As I run Arch Linux, which usually is pretty quick in updating the
packages from upstream, I haven't been able to reconfigure newlib for
quite some time now, but could mitigate this issue by compiling newlib
on a Debian server. By now, debian has also updated their packages. A
quick cursory search reveals that none of the current versions of
Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, CentOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD ship that version anymore.
This now leaves me in a situation where I'm unable to compile newlib on
any current Linux distribution without manually installing/compiling a
years-old version of automake to make use of a feature which has been
removed almost 4 years ago and has been deprecated even longer, which I
find quite … unlucky.
