Unable to clone the git mirror using http

Trying to clone the git mirror using the http protocol fails with:

  git clone http://sourceware.org/git/newlib.git
  fatal: http://sourceware.org/git/newlib.git/info/refs?service=git-upload-pack
  not found: did you run git update-server-info on the server?

Cloning using the git:// protocol works fine, and it doesn't seem to be
related to my local network (same error occurs on other networks).
