Patch has been checked in with slight modifications.  In the future, 
note that when there is a Makefile.am file in a directory, you need to 
edit it and regenerate Makefile.in as opposed to editing Makefile.in 
directly.  I have taken care of this for you, but you might want to 
check I didn't make any mistakes.
