Errors making m68k-coff version

I'm trying to make newlib hosted on i686-pc-linux-gnu to target m68k-coff
(actually, m68k-unknown-coff).  After crunching for a while I get the
following errors:

newlib/libc/include/sys/_type.h    Parse error before '__extension__'

newlib/libc/include/sys/reent.h     Parse error before '__extension__'

I can't see what the error is in the code.  I'm cross compiling using gcc
2.7.2.3 (which works), is this version too old?
