newlib and gmon

I'm trying to get profiling working on my 68k cross-compiled target.
for other systems I've looked at, mcount and other profiling routines
are part of libc.  should I be looking at adding profiling libraries to
newlib, or adding them elsewhere?

I find it hard to believe I'm the only person wanting to profile their
embedded system...
