AUGUST 2018
As summer winds down and our summer beach read pile shortens, it's time to
start
anew with a fresh TBR list. We can help you build that list - take a look
at
this month's Review Direct [1] [2]selections, and consider some of these
fine
independently published books for your bookshelves! Also, check out Amy
Shamroe's essay below. She has found that a foodie can get her fix far
beyond
reading cookbooks; many works of fiction feature scenes describing
delectable
snacks, luncheons, and outright feasts.
Fictitious Fare
BY AMY SHAMROE
_"He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast
beef,
roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled
potatoes, roast potatoes, fries, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy,
ketchup, and, for some strange reason, peppermint humbugs.'' __- HARRY
POTTER
AND THE SORCERER'S STONE_
If you are a true Potterhead, then you might know that Harry Potter turned
38
on July 31st. Aside from unforgettable characters, J.K. Rowling also penned
some
downright mouthwatering descriptions of feasts and treats. A reflection on
other
lush, literary luncheons (and assorted meals) seems a fitting way to
celebrate
the occasion.
_Heidi _by Johanna Spyri
Fondue is in again and foodies are indulging in Swiss style cheese binges
at
places like New York City's Raclette. Fans of Spyri's classic have been
comforted by the treat shared by Heidi and her grandfather long before
recent
restaurant trends.
_"...the old man held a large piece of cheese on a long iron fork over the
fire, turning it round and round till it was toasted a nice golden yellow
color
on each side ... the old man filled her bowl again to the brim and set it
before
the child, who was now hungrily beginning her bread having first spread it
with
the cheese, which after being toasted was soft as butter"_
_A Dance with Dragons _by George R.R. Martin
No list of bookish banquets would be complete without at least one entry
from
Martin's _A Song of Ice and Fire_. While every meal might be a character's
last,
at least they are often as epic as the series itself.
_"The beer was brown, the bread black, the stew a creamy white. She served
it
in a trencher hollowed out of a stale loaf. It was thick with leeks,
carrots,
barley, and turnips white and yellow, along with clams and chunks of cod
and
crabmeat, swimming in a stock of heavy cream and butter. It was the sort of
stew
that warmed a man right down to his bones, just the thing for a wet, cold
night.
Davos spooned it up gratefully." _
_Moby Dick _by Herman Melville
While the classic tale of man versus whale is littered with allusions and
reflections on obsession and purpose, it is not often thought of as a
culinary
masterpiece. Still, the New England classic of clam chowder is a pleasant
surprise for hungry sailors and tantalizingly described for readers.
"_Oh! Sweet friends, hearken to me. It was made of small juicy clams,
scarcely
bigger than hazel nuts, mixed with pounded ship biscuits, and salted pork
cut up
into little flakes! The whole enriched with butter, and plentifully
seasoned
with pepper and salt."_
_Remembrance of Things Past _by Marcel Proust
While some novels feature feasts that will add to the waistline just
reading
them, Proust taps into the sensory experience of taste and memory. Almost
every
English Lit major and classics reader can cite the infamous madeleine
scene.
_"The taste was that of the little piece of madeleine which on Sunday
mornings
at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before mass), when I
went
to say good morning to her in her bedroom, my aunt Lonie used to give me,
dipping it first in her own cup of tea or tisane."_
For more inspiration, check out Charles Roux's online series of reimagined
literary feasts, FICTIOUS FEASTS [3].
This was just a taste of the spreads in great novels. What books make your
mouth water?
