Woo-hoo!  I am most pleased to report that the diff problems were entirely
due to wacky filesystems on my end (the sysadmin for this machine was
being a moron... wait, i *am* the sysadmin).  The testsuites are now
running quite well.  Apologies for any concern that this caused.
