Solaris 2.8 build problem

ugh ugh ugh. meh meh meh. 

A couple of issues:

1) you can turn off -Werror and have this issue go away. This is what 
we've done in mainline for quite some time now: just edit 
src/Makefile[am, in]

2) search the mailing list (via the web-front-end) for the time period 
around this release, it should have discussion of this issue

if at all possible I suggest using the gcc-3 branch.
