can I use SGI STL string class under g++/libstdc++?

Sorry to bring up a topic which is common but:
(a) I've got a multithreaded application using the std::string type
(b) It sure ain't thread-safe using libstd++
I tried the naive approach: copied over SGI STL and tried to compile a
simple
program using that as my include directory. No way.
Anybody:
(1) Is there any way, using g++ (2.9.5) to compile with SGI STL
headers?
(2) If the answer to (1) is no, is there any way I can just use the
SGI string part,
which is supposed to be thread safe?
(3) Since thread-safety is so important, and libstd++ is based
heavily off of SGI STL,
why couldn't there be an option to use SGI's existing string
class (even if the libstdc++
think they can do better, ultimately). [Yes, I know, easy for
me to ask when I'm not
contributing anything...]
