sync_add_and_fetch

Hello all! I am trying to compile code that contains calls to
sync_add_and_fetch_4 which the dynamic linker isn't able to resolve. I
read that it is supposed to be included in gcc/g++ (?) v 4.1 and later.
I am running fedora linux 9, gcc version 4.3.0 20080428 which lists
glibc as version 2.16.6. How can I resolve this problem? Thank you very
