Unreadable localedef messages

I've applied this patch to 2.1 now.  I had to adjust all the copyright
lines myself.  Please don't forget this.

Adding the code to 2.2 is a bit more complicated since I have lots of
not committed local changes here.  I'll get to it when I have the
opportunity.
