Why not?  This seems like a good enough approach to me.  It deals easily
with the general issue of version incompatibility for the protocol used on
that socket.  (BTW, it seems pointless to have a dealing dot on that file
name.  /var/run is a directory that exists for this kind of thing, there is
no reason to hide the file.)
