The old behaviour was inconsistent anyway.  I left in the default case
but now it returns the number of processed argument, i.e., it just
stops.  This is the case on all the Unices I tested here.  The old
implementation just carried on doing things which might be very
dangerous.

I still think that returning a distinguishable value is better.
