getXXent.c endless loop

Try it now.  Earlier today I've checked in a change for files-XXX.c
and now also a change for db-XXX.c.  I was able to reproduce the
problem using the db backend but not with the files backend so my fix
from earlier today might have fixed it.  BTW, the problems in the two
backends were unrelated.
