Just to recap (I can as well just cap at 72 chars and be done with it,
but apparently there's a communication problem, and that's the most
important things to fix in computer science), keeping the longest line:

I'm sure re-reading everything and I don't see where logic fails: that
line *is* 80 characters-long, so it doesn't wraps around in usual
80-char terminals.
