According to CLDR v46, the values you're referring to are not considered
abbreviations, but "narrow" values. These are used when there is a need
to save space, such as in situations where the available width is
limited. In the case of the calendar box you provided, these narrow
values can not represent anything but weekdays, as they are typically
understood in that context. For instance, "Wed" would not appear before
"Fri," making it clear that these values are meant to represent days of
the week. The key difference between a calendar box and other contexts
is that calendars typically have predefined values for all weekdays and
months. However, when these values are used in isolation, they may not
be easily understood by many users.
Note that narrow values are not intended to replace abbreviations. While
narrow values are useful in specific contexts where space is constrained,
abbreviations can be used more broadly in a variety of situations where
there is more room for text.
