However, the case I am concerned with is where some special command needs 
to be used to run the test - whether an emulator, or a wrapper that runs 
the command via ssh on a board (that shares the build system's 
filesystem).  (This includes another squishy case of native, where the 
configured --enable-kernel is more recent than the kernel on the build 
system although the binary is of the same architecture.)
