I did also a look over the patch, it seems to be fine.

I agree with Roland, let's add a comment - and file a bugreport to 
revisit the files that we might implement differently.

Once this is done, please add a note to NEWS and update the manual as 
well to mention that Kernel 2.4.0 is the minimum requirement,
