That is a lot of subtle and underdocumented hair for an arcane problem
that doesn't exist in the standard compiler behavior.  I don't think
we're going to do anything about this until mainline GCC has chosen to
adopt a behavior that requires us to change.  If and when that happens,
then we'll figure out how best to adjust the libc code.
