GLIBC tree is frozen

i hadn't updated my x86_64 desktop in a while, so i first installed 
glibc-2.16.90 based on commit e933a9432cab6ff8d7995b984f0da625b3592f88.  
upgraded about 500 pkgs w/out errors.
