[PATCH] 2.15: BZ#411: Alternate fix for __i686 issue.

I've checked in the following alternate fix for BZ#411 e.g. the __i686
build issue.

This is already fixed on trunk, but I consider the trunk changes too
complicated for 2.15.1.

This fix is being checked into the 2.15 branch to allow it to build
unmodified on a larger number of distributions.
