not sure if you're highlighting the author date of the git commit here ... i 
don't think we need to enshrine that aspect at all as that is a lot more of a 
hassle to reset.  if people want to, feel free, otherwise keeping it intact 
(which is what git by & large does automatically) is fine by me.
