[PATCH] Use printf instead of echo for some shells.

I've added this, but only because printf is already used.  This does not
mean we'll rewrite all kinds of code to cater to broken shells.  If
there are people trying to use those I'll rather add a check for bash
right at the beginning to prevent these kind of stupid things.
