You said: use some other tools, which can do that (host, dig).
The problem is that we need to duplicate whole glibc resolver
functionality just because of a missing argument, something I
really can't understand.

BTW: I don't care how it's done, if you insist on not having
more shell variables, then let's do it another way (for example
with an additional argument to getent).
