I know it is, but some people say "it has better diagnostics".  Sure they are 
better, they are wrong.  When working on sed it's often not an option to say 
"use gcc" as I would for my other project GNU Smalltalk, for example.

Anyway the usage is limited to those two occurrences, while in most other 
places the shortcut "return *err = XXX, NULL" is not used.
