Hmm... All the packages that fail report exactly the same error 
(something about expecting an absolute path) which kindof points to GNU 
autoconf/automake (or a particular version of it) being at fault, which 
if true would make rather a mockery of the 'GNU configure conventions'.
I shall investigate further when I get a minute.
