mon_grouping bug again

Hi folks,

there are now 3 alternative patches available for the bug. I posted the first 
one originally at

And finally a patch that is probably the best, but I am not sure whether it 
breaks any backward compatibilty and how it works in a cross-compile 
environment.

Could someone comment on how to proceed with this issue.
