I think that must be a compiler bug. I haven't been able to try an alpha build myself lately, but I think they have been tested with the gcc-3_2-rhl8-branch compiler. I can't see anything wrong with the asm there (which is the INLINE_SYSCALL macro variant for 2-arg syscalls).
